HS - Can I repair a hearth tray that was scratched during general maintenance?

Scratches can be fixed if you have a Satin Black finish.

There are 2 types of finishes on the H-Series Hearth trays both of which are sprayed with a high temperature paint specifically designed for fireplaces:

  • Gloss Black Enameled Lacquer
  • Satin Black finish

The Black Enameled Lacquer is professionally applied and can only be refinished by a professional.

However, the Satin Black finish can be repaired using an off the shelf product called 'Stove Bright' Satin Black.   They make a high temperature paint specially formulated for use on fireplaces.

You can start by sanding on and around the scratches with 150 grit sand paper

1. Carefully feather the paint back to blend into the existing paint

2. Switch to 220 grit sandpaper to remove scratches from 150 sandpaper and prepare the surface for paint

3. Rather than spot priming the prepared area, it's best to paint a larger area around the scratches

4. For best results, apply a second coat over the entire tray after lightly re-sanding the initial area

5. Be sure to let the first layer of paint to dry before sanding.

6. Please paint in a well ventilated area

7. Follow all directions on the can of paint
