How do I re-tap the holes in my Focus pipe?
Tools and Materials Needed
Electric Drill
23/64” (6.7 mm) Drill Bit
7/16-14 tapping bit
Tapping Fluid
Rags
Eye Protection
Below Allen screws
Instructions
Using 23/64 drill bit with light layer of cutting oil, redrill hole through pipe using short bursts of power (1 second burst with 2 second delay between next burst) making sure drill bit is square and plumb to flue. Rag should be used to minimize spreading of cutting oil as cutting oil will affect paint finish. Drill all marked holes.
Using 7/16-14 tapping bit with handle, apply light coating of cutting oil. Insert the tap into the hole (keeping it straight) and apply a downwards pressure while turning the tap wrench in a clockwise direction until tap grabs metal. For every two turns in a clockwise direction, you should reverse and do half turn in a counterclockwise direction to clean out the hole. Apply additional cutting oil as needed while protecting paint with rag.
Remove tap and ensure hole is square to flue pipe.
Continue in this manner until the tap goes through the flue pipe by ¼”.
Remove the tap by turning counterclockwise and using rag remove any metal shards present.
Repeat process at all hole locations.
Test fit each hole with using Focus flat bottom clamping screw.
