\* Can I install the fireplace on a flat surface?

Yes but there has to be at least 2" under the fireplace to provide air to the fans that animate the flame ribbons.

\* Can the wall board be install directly on the 1/2" flange around the opening?

Yes,  the wall board can be install to the flange, **however** the entire weight of the wall board above the fireplace, must be supported by the framing above.

\* Are any air vents required to provide fresh air to the fans underneath?

No, these fans can reuse the air in the enclosure underneath the fireplace.
